Germany Receives Its First F-35A as Luftwaffe Modernization Begins

German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius hailed the arrival of the stealth aircraft as the dawn of a new era for the Luftwaffe. He emphasized the jet’s ability to synthesize vast amounts of sensor data into a comprehensive operational picture, a capability he views as essential for both national defense and broader transatlantic cooperation. Lieutenant General Holger Neumann, Chief of the German Air and Space Force, added that the aircraft will fundamentally alter how the military commands and conducts combat operations.

Lockheed Martin is scheduled to deliver 35 of the fighters to Germany. The initial training phase begins this fall at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas, where the first eight jets will be stationed. The aircraft are expected to arrive on German soil by late 2027, with the Luftwaffe reaching full operational capability by 2029. Beyond the hardware, the program deepens industrial ties, building on a German manufacturing contribution that dates back to 2001 and promising further growth in domestic aerospace sustainment and research.
