Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) led the growth, reaching $19.9 trillion by quarter's end—a 9.2% increase since March. Defined contribution plans, including 401(k) accounts, followed suit with an 8.7% rise, bringing their total to $15.0 trillion. Within the 401(k) segment, $10.8 trillion remains concentrated in employer-based plans, with mutual funds maintaining their status as the primary investment vehicle, managing 58% of those assets.
Government defined benefit plans also saw steady expansion, growing 5.1% to reach $10.4 trillion. Public and private sector stability, paired with the $1.2 trillion held in the Federal Employees Retirement System's Thrift Savings Plan, underscores a shift toward diversified retirement vehicles. Equity funds remain the dominant asset class for both IRAs and 401(k)s, accounting for $4.8 trillion and $3.7 trillion respectively, as households continue to favor market-exposed strategies for long-term security.
