Shenyang Regatta cements city status as China's rowing hub

Athletes navigated a 1,000-meter straight course and a challenging 4,500-meter island circuit, showcasing a mix of rowing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. The field included elite squads from Peking University, the University of Otago, and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, alongside corporate teams from BMW and Kingdee. Organizers expanded this year’s program to include physical strength challenges, blending land-based athleticism with traditional aquatic racing to broaden the event's reach.

Beyond the competition, the regatta acted as a catalyst for local commerce. Riverside sunset parties and night markets integrated music and leisure into the sporting agenda, fueling a localized “sports plus night economy” along the riverbanks. With the city’s 15th Five-Year Plan explicitly naming the creation of a “rowing capital,” officials are leveraging these annual events to turn the Hunhe River into a permanent engine for urban development and tourism.
