The initiative, which runs through June 30, 2027, targets children aged 5 to 14. Inspired by a 2024 suggestion from the insurer's local Community Advisory Committee, the program provides access to more than 20 sites where children can receive academic assistance, fitness training, and mentorship from youth-development professionals. Jennifer Schirmer, vice president at Blue Shield Promise, describes the effort as a direct investment in social and emotional stability for local families.
For Michelle Malin, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, the partnership addresses a critical safety and development void. Beyond physical security, the clubs offer a structured environment where children can build resilience and social skills. To participate, eligible Medi-Cal members simply need to visit a local branch, complete an enrollment form, and confirm their insurance status with club staff. This collaboration builds on a multi-year history between the two organizations, which previously partnered on well-child visit initiatives and community health awards.
