Habersham Central High School Hosts Safe Driving Summit

The event, sponsored by Bulldog Kia, features a keynote address from Mike Lutzenkirchen, who recounts the 2014 fatal crash of his son, former Auburn University football standout Philip Lutzenkirchen. Beyond the personal narrative, the summit offers technical instruction from first responders, trauma specialists, and law enforcement. Students will move through breakout sessions covering the aftermath of accidents, from the initial scene response by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office to long-term recovery insights from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

A central component of the program involves an immersive look at heavy vehicle operations. Through a partnership with FedEx Freight and Walmart, students will climb inside an 80,000-pound tractor-trailer to experience the limitations of a professional driver’s visibility. By analyzing blind spots and stopping distances, participants gain a clearer understanding of the physics involved in road safety. Dr. Adam Bagwell, principal of Habersham Central, noted that the curriculum is intended to instill a sense of responsibility in students both as operators and passengers. The initiative focuses on four pillars: maintaining a clear head, clear hands, clear eyes, and ensuring seatbelts are fastened before the vehicle moves.
