The competition, presented by Blue Buffalo, pits dogs against one another in 10-minute heats. A panel of professional surfers evaluates the participants on wave technique, ride length, and general enthusiasm. Winners in various weight classes will eventually advance to the Best-In-Surf finals, while the Freestyle Surf Contest allows for more creative displays, including tandem rides featuring multiple dogs or human-canine pairings.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the day includes a tribute to legends Sugar, Faith, and Delilah, alongside family-oriented beach activities. Since its inception, the event has evolved from a niche display of canine agility into a vital fundraising engine for the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Proceeds from the day support the organization’s ongoing efforts to provide care and find homes for thousands of orphan pets annually. Spectators unable to attend in person can view the proceedings via a live stream on the event's official Facebook page.
