China Aggressively Expands Gold Reserves with Largest Monthly Buy

The People’s Bank of China added 20.2 metric tonnes of gold to its national reserves in August, marking its most significant single-month acquisition since October 2023. This move pushes the country's total holdings to approximately 2,387 tonnes, underscoring a persistent 22-month trend of consistent bullion accumulation.

The August acquisition brings China’s total gold-related purchases to roughly 80 tonnes for the first eight months of 2026. This surge in volume, combined with shifting market valuations, saw the total worth of the nation's gold reserves climb from $306.35 billion in July to $350.08 billion by the end of August. The central bank has notably accelerated this pace since May, opting to capitalize on price pullbacks earlier this year to cement its position as the world’s sixth-largest reported gold holder.

Data from the World Gold Council highlights that China and Poland remain the primary drivers of sovereign gold demand in 2026. While China led the August surge, Poland continues to top the year-to-date scoreboard with 90 tonnes purchased, bringing its total to 640 tonnes toward a stated 700-tonne target. Other institutions, including the central banks of the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and Bolivia, have also contributed to global net buying, though on a smaller scale. Despite this activity, total global central bank purchases for the year reached approximately 130 tonnes, trailing the 160-tonne pace observed during the same period in 2025.
