Gold Rebounds as Fiscal Anxiety Fuels Debasement Trade

With U.S. national debt surpassing $40 trillion, investors are pivoting back to precious metals as a hedge against fiscal instability. Gold is currently tracking toward $4,700 an ounce, marking a 15-week high as market participants react to aggressive government intervention in the bond market and a weakening dollar.

Gold Rebounds as Fiscal Anxiety Fuels Debasement Trade

The current market momentum signals a resurgence of the so-called debasement trade, triggered by the U.S. Treasury's plan to purchase long-dated bonds to suppress borrowing costs. Bart Melek, head of commodity strategy at TD Securities, suggests that gold’s ascent reflects deep-seated concerns regarding the nation's fiscal trajectory. Despite these maneuvers, 30-year bond yields remain elevated at 5.23%, suggesting that the Treasury’s multi-billion dollar buyback efforts have yet to fully stabilize the yield curve.

While the outlook for gold remains bullish, analysts caution that the path forward is not without friction. Rising energy prices, specifically Brent crude hovering near $94, are stoking inflation expectations that could force the Federal Reserve to consider interest rate hikes. Nicky Shiels of MKS PAMP notes that while the debasement narrative provides a structural floor for prices, the potential for a tactical overshoot remains high. Investors are increasingly viewing gold as the primary hedge against both political intervention and currency devaluation, even as energy-driven inflation adds an unpredictable variable to the equation. JPMorgan analysts point out that global diversification away from the dollar in late 2025 previously propelled gold to record highs, a pattern that may repeat if fiscal policy continues to diverge from the central bank's tightening bias.
