Equinor Uncovers New Reserves at Mature Gullfaks South Field

Equinor has identified between 3.3 million and 10.3 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent at the Gullfaks South field in the North Sea. The discovery, unearthed during routine production drilling, signals a strategy of utilizing existing infrastructure to extract value from smaller, previously untapped reservoirs near Bergen.

The find, designated 34/10-D-4 BH, was made by the Askeladden rig approximately 190 kilometers northwest of the Norwegian coast. By leveraging a sidetrack during a standard production campaign, the partnership—comprising Equinor, Petoro, and OMV—effectively minimized the logistical overhead typically associated with standalone exploration projects.

Gunnar Egge, vice president for the Gullfaks field, characterized the discovery as a source of profitable barrels capable of sustaining activity at a site that has already passed its peak production years. While Equinor has yet to finalize a development timeline or provide output projections, the discovery serves as a template for extending the lifespan of mature assets. Integrating these smaller volumes into established processing facilities allows for commercial viability that would otherwise be unattainable in isolated fields.
