The acquisition, which includes 307 gross operated development locations, marks a significant growth milestone for the privately held producer. By consolidating these assets, Continental increases its total Permian acreage by more than 40% compared to its footprint 14 months ago. CEO Doug Lawler characterized the region as integral to the company’s long-term strategy, emphasizing that the proximity of FireBird’s assets to existing operations will streamline infrastructure and allow for more efficient drilling of longer laterals.
Backed by Quantum Capital Group, FireBird has spent the last year scaling its Midland Basin position. The deal is slated to close in September, though financial terms remain undisclosed. This move follows a broader trend of international diversification for Continental, including recent ventures into Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale and the Diyarbakir Basin in Turkey. Despite these global interests, the Permian remains the company’s primary engine for domestic production, offering a more mature landscape for immediate resource extraction.
