This shift enables nurses to detect pressure-induced tissue damage days before it becomes visible on the skin, creating a critical window for preventative intervention.

For decades, nursing staff have relied primarily on visual and tactile assessments to identify pressure injuries, often discovering damage only after it has progressed to the surface. The updated Guideline, endorsed by the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and other global bodies, now advocates for the use of SEM scanning as an adjunct to traditional methods. By measuring biocapacitance to detect focal edema, clinicians can identify physiological changes beneath the skin that typically precede visible wounds by an average of four days.

This transition addresses significant disparities in patient care, particularly for individuals with darker skin tones, where early signs of injury are frequently obscured by pigmentation. Beyond clinical efficacy, the adoption of objective measurement tools offers a clear economic advantage. Data indicates that preventing skin breakdown avoids the substantial costs associated with extended hospital stays, which can triple supply spending per case. By integrating these measurements into routine care, healthcare providers can now utilize a closed-loop system to verify if preventative measures, such as specialized bedding or repositioning, are effectively protecting tissue integrity.
