The new capability bridges the gap between large language models and CAD environments. By leveraging the Model Context Protocol, the server connects platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini directly to FeatureScript, Onshape’s proprietary language for design automation. This shift moves beyond simple text-to-model generation, focusing instead on creating reusable engineering tools that persist within a company’s workflow.
David Katzman, EVP and General Manager of Onshape and Arena at PTC, emphasized that the true utility of AI lies in transforming proven engineering concepts into repeatable assets. By capturing design expertise as permanent code rather than temporary AI prompts, organizations avoid recurring costs and ongoing model interaction. Jeff Hojlo, Research Vice President at IDC, noted that this represents a fundamental pivot in industrial strategy: moving from generating one-off outputs to operationalizing internal technical knowledge.
