Alley Cat Allies Deploys Emergency Aid to San Juan Amid Water Crisis

Rotating 48-hour water shutoffs in San Juan have triggered a desperate scramble for resources, prompting the advocacy group Alley Cat Allies to distribute emergency water and wet food. The relief effort targets both the city’s vulnerable cat population and the local caregivers struggling to maintain basic care during the drought.

Alley Cat Allies Deploys Emergency Aid to San Juan Amid Water Crisis

Working alongside the local organization Save A Gato, the Alley Cat Allies San Juan Cat Protection Team is distributing supplies free of charge to community members. Beyond immediate hydration and nutrition, the initiative provides essential veterinary support for animals caught in the heat-stressed environment. According to Ana María Salicrup, secretary of the board at Save A Gato, the emergency aid is a vital buffer against the record-breaking temperatures currently gripping Puerto Rico.

This mission extends the group’s long-standing presence in the region. Since 2023, Alley Cat Allies has spearheaded efforts to protect community cats at Paseo del Morro, successfully negotiating an agreement with the National Park Service to halt plans that would have resulted in the removal or death of the animals. The organization is now scaling its collaboration with local officials to establish sustainable, long-term welfare infrastructure throughout the city.
