The refurbishment, managed by local subsidiary Ibis Steel Company, promises to revitalize the shuttered industrial site while creating 350 jobs during the construction phase and 500 permanent roles once operational. Plans for a subsequent $500 million expansion could eventually double the total headcount to 1,000 employees. The facility is being engineered to produce steel and vanadium, a mineral essential to the aerospace, defense, and energy storage sectors.
Henry Heeney, co-founder of the U.S.-based investment firm, emphasized that the project serves to strengthen Western industrial capacity. The company claims the site will eventually have the capacity to supply the entirety of U.S. vanadium imports, positioning Trinidad and Tobago as a central link in regional supply chain security. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John attended the launch ceremony, signaling the diplomatic and strategic weight behind the venture.
