Acurx Pharmaceuticals Secures New Patents in Japan and Mexico

These additions bring the biopharmaceutical company’s total international patent count to ten, complementing its six existing U.S. patents. The portfolio protects key aspects of ibezapolstat and the ACX-375C program, which target the DNA polymerase IIIC enzyme to combat difficult-to-treat bacterial infections while avoiding gut dysbiosis. Currently, Acurx has additional patent applications under review across several other countries.

CEO David P. Luci noted that the new patents extend the company's protection as it advances its clinical development and AI-supported drug discovery platform. The company is preparing for a Phase 3 trial for ibezapolstat following recent FDA guidance, which indicated that a single successful trial could support an NDA filing for the treatment and recurrence reduction of C. difficile infections. While ibezapolstat remains the lead candidate, the company is simultaneously developing systemic antibiotics for conditions ranging from MRSA and bacterial pneumonia to anthrax.
