Boliden Secures Laver Mining Rights After Appeals Rejected

The Swedish government has upheld Boliden’s mining concession for the Laver deposit, dismissing two legal challenges against the permit granted last September. This decision clears a path for the company to extract copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum at the site, which has remained dormant since the original mine closed in 1946.

Boliden Secures Laver Mining Rights After Appeals Rejected

Stefan Romedahl, President of Boliden Mines, described the ruling as a vital step toward securing Europe’s strategic copper supply. The company views the Laver deposit as a cornerstone for increasing domestic self-sufficiency, noting that the site could boost Swedish copper output significantly and raise European production by roughly 10%. With the mining concession now locked in, the company faces a long road ahead, including the complex process of securing an environmental permit before any capital investment decisions or extraction activities can commence.

Exploration at the site has spanned nearly two decades, revealing indicated mineral resources of 849,500 kilotonnes at a 0.24% copper grade. Beyond raw material output, the project promises a substantial economic impact on the region, with projections suggesting the creation of approximately 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. Boliden intends to leverage the site to expand its production of low-carbon copper, aligning with broader European climate performance goals for critical raw materials.
