Banner Life Ascends to Top Spot in US Term Insurance Market

Banner Life and William Penn Life have surged to become the largest term life insurance provider in the United States, capturing 13% of the market share by the first quarter of 2026. This climb from seventh place in 2018 follows a record-breaking 2025 performance, during which the firm achieved $239 million in annualized premiums.

The company’s rapid expansion is rooted in the 2019 launch of its Horizon platform, a digital engine that streamlined the application process to as little as 20 minutes. The shift toward automation has yielded significant results: over 40% of applicants now receive instant decisions, while nearly 85% bypass traditional medical exams entirely. This technological pivot has propelled policy counts to grow by 38% in the first quarter of 2026, vastly outpacing the broader industry average of 6%.

Mark Holweger, CEO of the Banner Life family of companies, attributes this momentum to a combination of cultural investment and machine learning. The firm's consistent financial trajectory—growing from $97 million in annual premiums in 2020 to $239 million in 2025—eventually drew the interest of the Meiji Yasuda Group, which finalized its acquisition of the insurer in February 2026. Under new ownership, the company continues to focus on profitable growth, reporting $169 million in annualized premiums through June 2026 and a total contractual service margin balance of $1.56 billion.
