Northern California Concrete Drivers Launch Strike Against CalPortland

The dispute centers on the company’s refusal to coordinate bargaining dates across four local unions. Since June 8, the Teamsters have sought simultaneous negotiations, but CalPortland has countered by offering fragmented, two-day-per-month sessions scheduled through November. Union leadership argues this timeline intentionally delays progress until the peak summer construction season concludes.

Tom Gesualdi, director of the Teamsters Building Material and Construction Trade Division, characterized the company's strategy as a refusal to bargain in good faith. The union is demanding improved health care, pension protections, and a return to established working conditions. Stephen Beck Jr., secretary-treasurer of Local 853, stated that the company is attempting to weaken worker unity by forcing local chapters into isolated talks. The drivers remain on picket lines, vowing to continue their strike until the firm commits to realistic bargaining terms.
