Brent Crude Slides as Diplomatic Hopes Emerge Amidst US-Iran Tensions

Brent crude prices retreated to the $80-per-barrel mark this week, buoyed by signals from Washington and Doha regarding a potential draft agreement with Iran. The cooling of geopolitical anxiety coincides with mounting domestic pressure in the US, where President Trump has demanded refiners lower fuel costs amid record-breaking profit margins.

Brent Crude Slides as Diplomatic Hopes Emerge Amidst US-Iran Tensions

The political spotlight has turned sharply toward the energy sector as US oil majors face scrutiny over Q2 earnings. President Trump recently challenged ExxonMobil and Chevron to lower retail prices, alleging the companies have failed to acknowledge his administration’s efforts to support the industry. While production challenges in the Middle East and Kazakhstan have constrained output, refining margins have surged; the industry's 3-2-1 spread—representing the profit from gasoline and distillates—has doubled since March to $60 per barrel.

Market volatility remains high as infrastructure disruptions continue to ripple through global supply chains. Transits through the Strait of Hormuz have hit a two-month low following attacks on commercial vessels, including the recent targeting of the Minoan Pioneer. Aramco CEO Amin Nasser recently cautioned that the cumulative output loss since February has reached 2.6 billion barrels, suggesting that even with an immediate resolution to regional hostilities, restoring global supply levels could take 18 months of sustained production.
