Behavioral Health Clinics Expand Reach to 3.4 Million Patients

The 2026 CCBHC Impact Report reveals that these facilities are increasingly acting as a primary safety net for the most vulnerable. Nearly 1.4 million clients served in 2025 were identified as having serious mental illness or emotional disturbances, accounting for over half of the clinics' patient base. Substance use treatment also saw significant activity, with over 500,000 individuals receiving care. Notably, patients struggling with opioid use disorders at these sites accessed medication-assisted treatment at rates triple the national average.

Beyond clinical interventions, the clinics are impacting social determinants of health. Roughly 73% of locations report improvements in housing stability for their clients, while 65% noted gains in employment and job readiness. The model is also shifting the burden away from the criminal justice system; 76% of clinics report successful diversion strategies that steer individuals toward treatment rather than incarceration.

Pediatric and youth services have expanded rapidly, with 73% of clinics now providing care directly in schools or childcare settings. This growth in reach is supported by a push toward integrated primary care, allowing patients to manage chronic physical conditions alongside behavioral health needs in a single location. National Council CEO Chuck Ingoglia credited this progress to the clinics' ability to remove traditional barriers to care, positioning the model as a core component of the national healthcare infrastructure.
