Utopaya Rebrands as Straata, Deploying AI to Automate Payment Revenue

Charlotte-based advisory firm Utopaya has rebranded as Straata, launching an AI-native service designed to manage payment economics for banks, processors, and software platforms. By integrating proprietary software with human expertise, the company aims to replace traditional consulting models with automated, outcome-based revenue management.

Utopaya Rebrands as Straata, Deploying AI to Automate Payment Revenue

Most companies manage their highest-margin revenue lines through spreadsheets and manual audits. Straata’s data indicates that roughly 50 percent of potential payments revenue remains untapped, while nearly half of processor residual statements contain errors. Previously, firms relied on expensive senior hires, static consultant reports, or passive dashboards that identified problems without resolving them. Straata shifts this dynamic by embedding negotiation playbooks and reconciliation methods directly into its technology.

Built on five years of advisory work and the analysis of over $100 billion in annual payment volume, the platform allows a small team to execute tasks that once required ten times the headcount. CEO Brian Abernethy notes that while most businesses struggle to implement AI at scale, Straata uses its platform to own specific outcomes rather than merely providing recommendations. The firm operates on a fee-for-service model, explicitly rejecting referral fees or revenue shares from the vendors it evaluates to maintain client-side alignment. Clients can utilize the service for contract negotiations, interchange optimization, and merchant pricing, either by running the roadmap internally or delegating full execution to the Straata team.
