Linux Foundation Launches Tokenomics Foundation to Standardize AI Costs

The Linux Foundation has launched the Tokenomics Foundation, a new industry body tasked with creating open, vendor-neutral standards to measure the economic impact of artificial intelligence. Backed by 30 founding members, the initiative seeks to bridge the widening gap between massive AI infrastructure spending and verifiable business returns.

As AI adoption shifts from experimentation to core infrastructure, enterprises are struggling to quantify the true cost of intelligence. With token consumption projected to rise 24-fold by 2030, the industry currently lacks a unified language to track the total cost of ownership, which extends far beyond the cost of a single token to include compute, storage, data, and human labor.

The Tokenomics Foundation aims to replace fragmented vendor pricing with standardized benchmarks. Its roadmap includes the development of AI Value Frameworks, cost-to-serve metrics, and standardized telemetry within the FOCUS specification. By establishing these ground rules, the foundation intends to help organizations move toward a model where AI spend is tied directly to measurable business outcomes, such as work completed without human intervention.

Founding members of the initiative include industry giants such as Accenture, IBM, JPMorganChase, Oracle, SAP, and ServiceNow. The group will operate through a governing board and technical steering committees to ensure that the metrics remain agnostic and applicable across diverse AI supply chains, mirroring the collaborative approach previously used to standardize cloud economics.
