Neil Nelson and the Evolution of ESI Construction

Nelson’s leadership trajectory began on a Montana ranch, where he developed the principles of accountability and perseverance that would eventually define his approach at ESI. When he joined the firm in the 1990s, it was a small operation with a limited portfolio. Under his guidance, the company evolved to manage complex projects across the United States, earning recognition as Engineering News-Record’s Intermountain West Contractor of the Year. Today, the firm employs more than 1,000 people and executes work ranging from advanced technology facilities to mission-critical environments.

Central to this expansion is the ESI Academy, a training initiative designed to combat industry-wide labor shortages by promoting from within. Nelson views this investment in human capital as a core business strategy, ensuring that leadership roles are filled by those who have risen through the company's ranks. This focus on internal growth is complemented by the ESI CARES Foundation, which formalizes the company’s charitable commitments to the communities where its employees live.

Beyond the corporate office, Nelson has maintained close ties to higher education, specifically through his alma mater, Boise State University. He provided a multi-million-dollar gift for the university’s new ESI Construction Management Building, set to open in 2026.
