Ticketbud Integrates RFID and NFC to Streamline Large-Scale Event Entry

Austin-based ticketing platform Ticketbud has integrated RFID and NFC technology into its management suite, allowing organizers to replace or augment traditional QR code scanning with tap-and-scan credentials. The update aims to reduce bottlenecks at high-traffic events while improving security for VIP zones, backstage areas, and multi-day festivals.

The new capabilities allow organizers to link digital tickets to physical, tamper-resistant wristbands or badges. While QR codes remain a staple for instant mobile delivery, the shift toward chip-based technology addresses common operational pain points, such as camera-read errors in low-light environments and the risks of ticket replication. According to Ticketbud CEO Kayhan Ahmadi, the system is designed to unify access control across various guest tiers and restricted zones within a single interface.

By leveraging modern smartphones as scanning devices, the platform avoids the need for bulky, expensive hardware often associated with legacy access systems. Event teams can manage diverse entry requirements—from staff and media access to sponsor spaces—without adding complexity to on-site operations. Independent consultant Deidre Sibila noted that the technology prioritizes speed and usability, enabling staff to maintain momentum even at complex festivals. The system supports hybrid models, where organizers can issue QR codes for general admission while distributing pre-shipped or on-site activated NFC credentials for VIP or high-security areas.
