Led by Professor Ji Yeon Kim, the research team investigated the effects of the oil, which consists of up to 70% α-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Over an eight-week period, 65 participants between the ages of 19 and 69 received either perilla oil capsules or a placebo. The results, published in the journal Food and Function, indicated that those taking the supplement experienced prolonged collagen-induced ADP closure time—a key marker of improved platelet function—and a reduction in inflammatory markers such as TNF-α and TBX21.
Beyond these physiological shifts, the trial confirmed that the oil effectively boosts levels of ALA and its metabolite, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), in both plasma and red blood cells. While the findings provide a compelling case for using perilla oil as a vegan-friendly alternative to fish oil, the researchers noted that the supplement did not produce significant changes during high-fat, high-glucose loading tests. This suggests that while perilla oil is a viable dietary intervention for vascular health, longer durations of use may be necessary to counter acute metabolic stress.
