Strait of Hormuz Blocked as Tankers Retreat Under Fire

A fire aboard one of two oil tankers attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz forced both vessels to turn back, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The incident occurred in the southern transit lane, a corridor Iran labels unsafe and claims as its sovereign territory.

The IRGC stated that American aircraft had encouraged the vessels to utilize the southern route near the Omani coast, a path now largely abandoned by commercial operators. Since the collapse of regional ceasefires, Iran has systematically targeted shipping in these waters, prompting most tankers to navigate the area with transponders disabled to evade detection. This latest encounter follows a series of direct military escalations between Washington and Tehran. U.S. Central Command forces executed a heavy wave of strikes against IRGC targets late Wednesday, retaliating for attempted missile attacks on American positions earlier in the week. Iran responded by declaring the Strait effectively closed to those who interfere with its maritime authority.

Energy markets reacted sharply to the intensifying volatility. Brent crude prices surged 1.5% in early Thursday trading, climbing past $92 per barrel. With the U.S. and Saudi Arabia conducting parallel operations against Iran-backed militias in Iraq, the maritime conflict appears poised to further disrupt global supply chains.
