Northeast Indiana Secures Top-Tier Rank in Defense Manufacturing

While national aerospace investment has surged, prime contractors increasingly face execution failures, labor shortages, and delayed production schedules. Northeast Indiana differentiates itself by retaining a deep industrial base that others abandoned. The region currently supports over 10,000 aerospace and defense professionals, providing the physical capacity to scale production that innovation-focused hubs often lack.

"We still build stuff here," said NEI CEO Stéphane Frijia, noting that the region’s strength lies in its ability to maintain production schedules. Major defense firms including BAE Systems, L3Harris, and Raytheon already anchor the local ecosystem, supported by a dense network of precision machining and microelectronics suppliers. With logistical advantages like Fort Wayne International Airport and Foreign Trade Zone #182, the region is betting that current national demand for production readiness will keep its manufacturing sector at the forefront of the defense industry.
