The move aligns with a broader federal goal to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050, positioning nuclear energy as a critical, zero-emission solution for the 24/7 power required by modern computing infrastructure.
Global interest in the sector is intensifying, despite early skepticism surrounding the technology. Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov, operational since 2020, serves as the only active offshore plant, while China pursues similar logistics hubs. Private sector momentum is also building: U.S.-based Bluecore Energy is developing modular reactors for floating barges, and Samsung Heavy Industries has partnered with Sargent & Lundy to standardize floating power platforms. However, the path forward faces significant hurdles. The Interior Department has flagged potential national security risks, including radar interference, while environmental groups warn of the ecological impact on marine ecosystems.
