AiCandy and the AI-Driven Revolution in Commercial Filmmaking

Two years after a casual conversation at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, advertising veterans Kent Boswell and Marcus Tesoriero have turned a speculative brainstorm into AiCandy, Australia’s first AI-powered film production studio, aiming to bridge the widening gap between shrinking production budgets and escalating creative expectations.

AiCandy and the AI-Driven Revolution in Commercial Filmmaking

The founders recognized that the advertising industry was struggling with a paradox: clients demanded high-quality, ambitious visuals while simultaneously slashing budgets. By leveraging generative AI, Boswell, who brings a background in tech and production, and Tesoriero, a creative veteran, sought to bypass the limitations of traditional film sets. Their studio now employs a global cohort of AI artists to execute projects that were previously dismissed as too expensive or technically impossible.

The studio’s portfolio includes surreal and high-concept imagery, from futuristic submerged cities to stylized public health campaigns. Tesoriero notes that projects once relegated to the "bottom drawer" due to cost constraints can now be produced with speed and efficiency. This shift serves as an equalizer, allowing smaller brands to compete with global corporations by greenlighting ambitious concepts that were once out of reach.

Beyond commercial work, the duo is exploring the emotional impact of AI-generated content. A recent project for the United Nations, which visualized the potential consequences of missing 2030 sustainable development goals, highlighted the medium's capacity for genuine storytelling. According to Boswell, the ability to provoke a visceral reaction from audiences validates their transition from traditional agency roles to the frontier of AI-assisted filmmaking.
