Katkam’s transition from a PhD chemist at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories to a business leader in 2017 was rooted in the belief that innovation is not restricted to R&D. By viewing the entire value chain through a scientific lens, he has propelled Hyderabad-based MSN Group into a dominant position. The company now oversees 25 manufacturing facilities and serves over 500 million patients, with its API division generating more than US$650 million annually.
Scaling Complexity and Strategic Partnerships
MSN Group’s competitive edge relies on a high-volume, high-complexity strategy. The company has filed 570 United States drug master files, significantly outperforming its nearest rival. To maintain this momentum, Katkam is shifting the portfolio toward specialized areas like peptides, prostaglandins, and oligonucleotides. This pivot requires heavy investment in analytical capabilities and a dedicated team of 350 scientists focused solely on product life cycle management.
Beyond technical prowess, Katkam prioritizes long-term stability through a "China plus one" supply chain strategy. By back-integrating in-house and investing in partners like Calibre Chemicals, he aims to mitigate global risks. For Katkam, leadership is less about individual brilliance and more about cultivating trust and transparency to mentor the next generation. He views the fear of delegating as the primary barrier to growth, advocating instead for a model built on humility and the consistent development of human capital.
