Documentary KŪKAI to Screen at Beverly Hills' Writers Guild Theatre

On July 30, the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills will host a screening of KŪKAI, an award-winning documentary that chronicles the 804 AD pilgrimage of the Buddhist monk Kūkai to Tang China. The event invites audiences to explore the monk's legacy through a blend of historical research and cinematic reconstruction.

Directed by Yue Ye, the 90-minute film examines the life of the man who would become the founder of Shingon Buddhism. The narrative follows his journey to study under Master Huiguo, capturing how he returned to Japan with teachings that fundamentally reshaped religious practice, art, and intellectual life across East Asia for over a millennium. The production distinguishes itself by integrating a large-scale symphonic score composed by Zou Ye, performed by ensembles including the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The upcoming event features a reception followed by a Q&A session with director Yue Ye and her creative team. Having already garnered eight international awards and official selections at 24 film festivals, the documentary represents Ye’s transition from senior editorial roles in national media to independent feature filmmaking. By focusing on themes of compassion and cultural exchange, the film aims to highlight the historical openness of the Tang Dynasty while connecting the monk's ancient ethos to contemporary spiritual inquiry.
