The residency, held June 10-12, drew nearly 80 higher education professionals for curriculum-focused discussions on institutional sustainability, governance, and artificial intelligence. This cohort marks the sixth group to complete the yearlong Community of Fellows program, an initiative designed to provide competency-based training for the next generation of HBCU executives. During the event, Howard University president emeritus Wayne A.I. Frederick received the Frederick S. Humphries Sr. Leadership Award, while former Spelman College president Dr. Johnnetta Cole delivered the keynote address.
Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, executive director of HBCU ELI, emphasized that current institutional needs require a blend of legacy stewardship and modern innovation. As leadership turnover accelerates across the national higher education sector, the institute’s mission focuses on mitigating these vacancies by pairing mentorship with executive coaching. With participants representing over 30 institutions, the program seeks to ensure that HBCUs continue to function as primary engines for economic mobility and workforce development. The fellows will continue their leadership journey through the remainder of 2026, supported by ongoing peer learning and applied experiences.
