Dr. Marc Hurlbert Takes the Helm at National Kidney Foundation

Hurlbert arrives at the foundation with over 25 years of experience in healthcare, spanning patient advocacy, public health, and research equity. His appointment comes at a critical juncture, as the organization seeks to translate rapid scientific breakthroughs into tangible patient outcomes. Having managed over $750 million in funding throughout his career, he is tasked with bridging the gap between academic innovation and practical clinical application.

Beyond his professional background, Hurlbert brings a personal perspective to the mission, having served as a care partner for his brother. He plans to spend his initial weeks in the role engaging with staff, patients, and local boards to identify key areas for expansion. Kevin Longino, who served as CEO since 2015, will remain involved during the transition to ensure continuity as the foundation tackles persistent disparities in kidney health. With 1 in 7 American adults currently living with chronic kidney disease, Hurlbert faces an urgent need to improve early detection rates, which currently remain below 20 percent for those at high risk.
