Vietnam Charts Path for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Integration

Policymakers and industry leaders gathered in Hanoi on June 25 to evaluate the integration of sustainable aviation fuel into Vietnam’s energy infrastructure. The conference focused on aligning national decarbonization goals with regional supply chain potential, aiming to balance aviation growth with the country’s 2050 net-zero emissions commitment.

Vice Minister Le Anh Tuan opened the sessions by emphasizing that any roadmap for sustainable fuels must be tailored to Vietnam’s specific economic landscape. The discussions prioritized a delicate balance between aggressive emissions reduction, energy security, and maintaining the competitiveness of the domestic aviation sector. Representatives from the Ministry of Construction, the Vietnam Academy of Construction Strategy and Cadres Training, and the Global Centre for Green Fuels examined how Vietnam might leverage its feedstock resources and infrastructure to carve out a role in the broader Asia-Pacific energy market.

Keynote speaker Subash S., Deputy Regional Director of the ICAO Asia and Pacific Office, underscored that national roadmaps are ineffective without coordinated policy frameworks across government agencies and financial institutions. Industry participants, including Vietnam Airlines, Airbus, and Boeing, provided technical perspectives on the complexities of certification and supply chain logistics. By synthesizing regional experiences from Southeast Asian counterparts, the conference aimed to provide a blueprint for the legislative and market-based conditions required to transition Vietnam toward a sustainable aviation future.
