Oil Prices Rally as Houthi Attacks Target Saudi Infrastructure

Brent crude futures climbed 1.62% to $115.70 a barrel early Wednesday, fueled by renewed Houthi missile strikes on Saudi Arabian territory. The resurgence of hostilities near critical energy infrastructure has eclipsed recent diplomatic efforts, heightening market anxiety over potential supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf.

Oil Prices Rally as Houthi Attacks Target Saudi Infrastructure

The primary catalyst for the price surge involves reports that the Ras Tanura refinery, a vital 550,000-barrel-per-day facility, was targeted by a ballistic missile on Tuesday. While Saudi authorities have not confirmed a direct hit or operational failure, the incident triggered a sharp reversal in sentiment following Tuesday’s price dip. Markets had previously softened on optimism surrounding multi-national diplomatic talks involving Saudi, Turkish, Pakistani, and Iranian officials.

Beyond the refinery concerns, Saudi air defenses reported intercepting a barrage of three ballistic missiles aimed at the Eastern Province and four drones directed toward the south. Debris from intercepted projectiles in Riyadh damaged a vehicle and a construction site, according to civil defense officials. These strikes, combined with rumors of a potential U.S. military campaign against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections, have intensified the geopolitical risk premium.

Supply-side pressures are further bolstered by American Petroleum Institute estimates showing a 2.03 million-barrel draw in crude inventories for the week ending October 23. While rising gasoline and distillate stocks provided a minor offset, the focus remains on the upcoming EIA inventory report. Traders are treating the physical security of the Ras Tanura complex as the bellwether for near-term price volatility, as the facility serves as both a major refinery and a critical export terminal.
