Trump’s Reverse Nixon Strategy: Isolating China Through Russian Energy

Following a recent phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the Treasury Department issued a six-month waiver permitting Russian diesel sales on global markets. While framed as a measure to curb fuel costs before midterms, the move signals a broader geopolitical realignment aimed at starving China of energy resources.

Trump’s Reverse Nixon Strategy: Isolating China Through Russian Energy

The administration’s strategy mirrors a reversed Nixon-era maneuver: rather than using China to balance the Soviet Union, Washington now seeks to pull Russia away from Beijing by restoring its access to Western energy markets. By securing control over global supply routes—from the seized assets in Venezuela to the blockaded Strait of Hormuz—the U.S. is systematically cutting off China’s primary energy lifelines. Moscow, increasingly frustrated by its subordinate role in the partnership with Beijing and stalled infrastructure projects, may find the prospect of reclaiming European customers an irresistible pivot.

Central to this plan is the potential rehabilitation of the Nord Stream pipelines. Washington and Moscow have reportedly discussed U.S. investment in the damaged infrastructure, which would offer European nations a political pretext to resume Russian gas imports without appearing to capitulate. This shift would require Moscow to curtail support for Iran and accept a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine involving marginal territorial concessions. While President Zelensky is expected to resist such terms, the threat of reduced American military and intelligence aid could force Kyiv’s hand. Ultimately, this maneuver reflects a deep, bipartisan consensus in Washington: containing China’s economic expansion remains the primary objective of U.S. foreign policy, regardless of the cost to global energy prices or the stability of existing alliances.
