Studsvik to Manage Norway’s Nuclear Legacy in Multi-Billion Crown Deal

Swedish nuclear technology firm Studsvik has secured a long-term contract with Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning to transport and treat 16.5 tonnes of spent fuel. The agreement, spanning until 2055, addresses the disposal of hazardous waste from Norway’s decommissioned research reactors at Halden and Kjeller.

The deal, signed in Halden on October 16, 2026, by Studsvik CEO Karl Thedéen and NND Director General Pål Mikkelsen, marks a significant shift in Norway's waste strategy. Studsvik will transport the inventory—which includes metallic uranium and aluminium-clad fuel—to its specialized facilities in Nyköping for inspection, treatment, and interim storage. The project begins immediately with a pre-study to establish a definitive budget and operational plan.

Financial projections estimate the total value of the work at SEK 3–4 billion, with a minimum contractual commitment of SEK 875 million. The arrangement provides for a fixed annual fee covering security, regulatory compliance, and storage reservation. While the agreement runs for nearly three decades, NND maintains termination rights following the initial study phase or after a five-year period. Both parties view the arrangement as the most viable path to ensure environmental and economic safety for materials that cannot currently be stored long-term in their existing state.
