The inaugural State of Capacity Building report, which surveyed 408 nonprofits along with 101 intermediaries and 135 funders, highlights the systemic nature of 'capacity debt.' This term describes the organizational strain that accumulates when nonprofits lack the time, funding, or infrastructure to address fundamental operational gaps. Although fund development and revenue strategy remain top priorities for both sides of the funding table, fewer than one in five nonprofits received a dedicated grant for capacity building in the past year.
Even when support is provided, the impact remains inconsistent. While 69% of organizations reported some benefit from capacity-building efforts over the last year, only 13% described those results as highly effective. Data suggests this stems from a lack of feedback loops, as three out of five funders currently lack mechanisms to track the specific capacity needs of their grantees. For smaller organizations with budgets under $1M, these frictions are particularly acute, creating a barrier to growth that reinforces existing sector disadvantages.
