The restoration operation relies on a workforce of more than 6,400 outside personnel, including lineworkers and specialists drawn from 25 states via the industry’s mutual assistance network. This external support bolsters the internal resources of Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power, allowing for a concentrated surge of equipment and labor in the hardest-hit regions. Southern Company Gas, Atlanta Gas Light, and Chattanooga Gas are also coordinating closely with electric teams to ensure safety and infrastructure stability.
Chris Womack, chairman and CEO of Southern Company, attributed the speed of the response to the integration of predictive storm intelligence with decades of field experience. Before landfall, the company utilized AI-driven forecasting to pre-position crews and materials, a strategy designed to minimize downtime once conditions became safe for field work. This year-round investment in grid infrastructure and predictive technology remains the cornerstone of the company’s approach to extreme weather events, ensuring that resources are staged long before a storm arrives.
