According to new research from DC Market Insights, the market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 7.43% from its 2025 valuation of $29.75 billion. While proprietary Type 1 hypervisors currently dominate with a 71.8% market share, this figure is expected to contract to 53.5% by 2035. In their place, open-source KVM-based platforms and Kubernetes-native solutions are gaining significant traction, with the latter category projected to grow by 21.29% annually.
This transition is fundamentally altering enterprise spending patterns. Amit Jain, lead analyst at DC Market Insights, noted that the next decade will be defined by how operators manage mixed VM-container estates rather than simple workload virtualization. As companies automate patching and capacity planning across multiple platforms, demand for migration services and orchestration software is rising. Consequently, managed services are forecast to be the fastest-growing component, advancing at 11.70% annually to reach $7.67 billion by 2035.
Geographically, North America remains the primary market, holding 40.6% of global value. However, Asia Pacific is emerging as a critical growth engine, with India identified as the fastest-growing country market at 13.49% annually. As enterprises navigate these shifts, the competitive landscape—led by major players like Broadcom, Microsoft, and Citrix—is increasingly prioritizing workload portability and total cost of ownership to accommodate more complex, hybrid data center architectures.
