Built around the Morse Micro MM8108-M20-US module, the GW16170 operates within the 902–928 MHz license-exempt band. By utilizing sub-GHz frequencies, the hardware achieves superior penetration compared to standard 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi systems. This allows for fewer access points across large campuses or outdoor facilities while supporting up to 43.3 Mbps data rates and over 100 connected clients per node.
The module integrates directly into any single board computer equipped with an M.2 2230 E-Key socket. It is optimized for plug-and-play compatibility with Gateworks' own Venice, VeniceFLEX, and Catalina families, which run on NXP Semiconductors’ i.MX 8M and 95 processors. Because it utilizes standard Linux IP networking and supports WPA3 security protocols, developers can implement the hardware without needing proprietary software development kits. The unit is currently FCC certified for North American use, with a separate model, the GW16167, available for European deployments.
