Utah State University Opens Wellness Center for Veterinary Students

Thirty-two percent of first-year veterinary students report clinical levels of depression, a staggering statistic that prompted the opening of the new Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center at Utah State University. The facility aims to normalize mental health support as a foundational pillar of clinical education.

Located within the College of Veterinary Medicine, the center provides students with dedicated spaces for meditation and mindfulness, alongside private rooms for consultations with wellness specialists. The initiative is funded by the Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission, which has already directed over $3.5 million toward industry-wide mental health and financial aid programs since 2024.

Michael Bishop, director of student affairs for the college, emphasized that the goal is to equip students with the resilience necessary to sustain a demanding career. This focus on long-term well-being arrives as the university expands its footprint; the institution welcomed its inaugural class of 39 students in 2025 and currently serves 77 students in its class of 2030, all operating within the new Thomas and Patricia Willis Veterinary Medical Education building.
