Dodla Dairy: Scaling an Indian Milk Giant

With India accounting for a quarter of the world’s milk production, Dodla Dairy has transformed from a local startup into a transnational force. CEO Venkat Krishna Reddy Busireddy, the company’s first employee in 1998, now oversees a sprawling network of 18 processing plants and over 1,200 retail outlets.

Dodla Dairy: Scaling an Indian Milk Giant

Dodla Dairy’s growth strategy centers on self-sufficiency across the entire value chain. By managing procurement, processing, and distribution internally, the company maintains strict control over its output. Daily operations now involve collecting 1.7 million liters of fresh milk from farmers across five Indian states. This vertical integration is bolstered by a shift toward digital payments, replacing the logistical burden of cash-based village collections with automated, transparent systems.

Expansion efforts have moved beyond India’s saturated southern markets. Busireddy has identified the eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand as critical growth zones, while international ventures in Uganda and Kenya have provided lucrative margins. These African operations, primarily brownfield acquisitions, demonstrate a pragmatic approach to scaling. Whether through greenfield projects or buying existing infrastructure, the company prioritizes speed and regional demand. As product lines expand to include high-value items like paneer and curd, the firm continues to lean on long-term partnerships with suppliers like Deejay MultiPacks to maintain quality standards across its diverse portfolio.
