Draper Breaks Ground on Microelectronics Hub in Lowell

With only 3 percent of chip packaging currently performed domestically, the national supply chain faces a significant vulnerability. Draper’s new 111,000-square-foot IMPACT Center, which broke ground today in Lowell, Massachusetts, aims to close this gap by providing an onshore facility for advanced microelectronic design and production.

The IMPACT Center, situated within the Hamilton Canal Innovation District, serves as a cornerstone of the Lowell Innovation Network Corridor. By 2029, the facility will provide manufacturing services ranging from initial design to field-ready systems. The project is designed to bolster the domestic defense ecosystem, ensuring that critical technologies remain protected from foreign disruption.

Beyond technical output, the center is expected to generate over 100 high-skilled positions, including roles for technicians, engineers, and executives. Draper CEO Jerry M. Wohletz emphasized that the initiative will tap into local talent, specifically targeting graduates from UMass Lowell. The construction project relies on a mix of state and local funding, alongside private sector development partners including Wexford Science & Technology, GMH Communities, and First Atlantic.
