Amazon Drivers in Torrance Organize for Teamsters Recognition

More than 500 drivers at Amazon’s DCX7 and DDO6 facilities in Torrance, California, marched on management this morning to demand union recognition. By joining Teamsters Local 396, these workers are challenging the retail giant to address stagnant wages, grueling production quotas, and a lack of consistent full-time scheduling.

The mobilization highlights a deepening divide as the company reports a 30 percent profit increase while offering many employees only a marginal one-dollar-per-hour raise. For drivers like Kevin Olea-Martinez at the DDO6 facility, the current compensation is insufficient to cover the high cost of living in Southern California, forcing some to hold three jobs simultaneously to survive. Randy Korgan, Director of the Teamsters Amazon Division, described the recent pay adjustments as an insult to those performing work that typically commands significantly higher industry standards.

This push in Torrance brings the total number of organized Amazon workers nationwide to over 10,000 across 16 facilities. Morgan Miller, a driver at DCX7, emphasized that the decision to unionize serves as a necessary step to secure basic protections that the company has failed to provide voluntarily. As these drivers seek a collective bargaining agreement, they join a broader labor movement targeting the retail giant’s employment practices.
