Tianjin University Marks 131 Years of Academic and Technical Innovation

As Tianjin University celebrates its 131st anniversary this October, China’s first modern institution is pivoting toward frontier technologies. By launching the TJU Plan 3.0 and fast-tracking young researchers under 35, the university aims to secure its position at the vanguard of global engineering and artificial intelligence development.

Tianjin University Marks 131 Years of Academic and Technical Innovation

The institution is currently restructuring its academic focus across 11 key fields, including embodied intelligence and brain-computer technology. These initiatives are supported by the U35 Plan, which elevates exceptional young scholars to full professorships to ensure a dynamic research environment. The university’s pedagogical shift aligns with its role as the lead institution for the National Working Group on Emerging Engineering Education, prioritizing talent ready for the demands of evolving global industries.

Practical innovation remains a cornerstone of the campus culture, evidenced by the Shengong-Shengao brain-computer interface system. Led by Professor Liu Xiuyun, this technology cut the diagnostic time for cognitive impairment conditions like hydrocephalus from several days to 30 minutes. This focus on real-world applications extends to the National Facility for Earthquake Engineering Simulation and high-precision energy storage research. Such output earned TJU researchers lead roles in five National Science and Technology Awards in 2025, while its chemistry, engineering, and materials science departments now rank in the global top 1‱ according to Essential Science Indicators.
