Novartis Bets $7.2 Billion on Abogen’s mRNA Autoimmune Platform

Novartis has secured a worldwide license for Abogen’s ABO2203, an mRNA-encoded T-cell engager designed to reset B cells in patients with autoimmune diseases. The deal grants the pharmaceutical giant exclusive options for further programs built on the Suzhou-based biotech firm's proprietary RNA platform, signaling a major shift in autoimmune treatment.

Novartis Bets $7.2 Billion on Abogen’s mRNA Autoimmune Platform

The agreement centers on ABO2203, a therapeutic candidate that uses mRNA to trigger the endogenous production of T-cell engagers within the body. By targeting CD19 and CD3 proteins, this method aims to deplete B cells more effectively than traditional recombinant therapies. Abogen CEO Bo Ying described the partnership as a validation of the company’s transition from prophylactic vaccines toward complex therapeutic applications.

Fiona Marshall, President of Biomedical Research at Novartis, noted that the in vivo production of molecules could offer a more durable approach to immune system resetting. Under the financial terms, Abogen will receive an upfront payment of USD 575 million. Total potential milestone payments could reach USD 7.2 billion, provided the programs clear necessary development, regulatory, and commercial hurdles. The deal also includes provisions for future royalties on product sales, pending standard regulatory clearances.
