The report, "Unmet Opportunities: Multifocal Contact Lenses and the Anti-Aging Movement," highlights a distinct disconnect between consumer priorities and clinical practice. While two-thirds of adults over 38 are actively seeking ways to preserve a youthful appearance, more than half remain unfamiliar with multifocal lenses. This lack of awareness serves as a barrier to adoption, even though three-quarters of those familiar with the technology express a willingness to wear them.
Jennifer Palombi, Director of Professional Affairs for CooperVision, suggests that eye care professionals should pivot their strategy toward earlier intervention. Data shows that adults aged 38 to 42 prefer discussing presbyopia before symptoms manifest, valuing the lenses for their ability to project a youthful image and avoid age-related stereotypes. By integrating these discussions into routine exams, practitioners can address patient concerns about aging while simultaneously expanding their service offerings.
