The Community Health Impact Investment Calculator translates national economic burdens into hyper-local data. By inputting specific geographic information, mayors and business executives can visualize the immediate health challenges facing their workforce and neighborhoods. The tool models potential financial returns on community-based interventions, citing peer-reviewed studies that suggest investment payoffs ranging from 4:1 to as high as 27:1.
Jean C. Accius, president and CEO of Creating Healthier Communities, noted that while the national crisis is vast, local leaders are best equipped to address the conditions in their immediate proximity. The calculator highlights stark disparities often masked by city-wide averages, such as the 10.8-year life expectancy gap between neighborhoods in New York City. These figures are derived from federal and peer-reviewed sources to provide a reliable baseline for policy and investment decisions.
This launch expands upon the organization’s "Built to Thrive" initiative, which advocates for upstream investments to address social determinants of health. The project aligns with CHC’s broader goal to halve the life-expectancy gap between the healthiest and least healthy communities within the next decade. The calculator is now accessible to the public, offering a standardized way to measure the economic value of healthier local environments.
