The program moves beyond traditional cafeteria offerings by integrating chef-led culinary demonstrations and pop-up tastings into the school day. By highlighting macro-friendly recipes like chipotle chicken rice bowls and overnight oats, the initiative aims to demonstrate how whole grains, lean proteins, and produce support student energy levels. According to Amy Shaffer, CEO of Chartwells K12, the project treats school meals as a primary tool for student success rather than a mere necessity.
Beyond the menu, the initiative provides practical education on hydration and pre-activity fueling. Lindsey Palmer, Vice President of Nutrition and Industry Relations, emphasizes that the approach intentionally avoids restrictive dieting, focusing instead on empowering students to make informed choices that align with their personal goals. Power Up joins a wider suite of dining programs currently deployed across the company's 5,000 partner schools, reflecting a shift toward interactive, student-centered cafeteria environments.
